Insulated Siding & What You Need To Know

février 11, 2021

Insulated siding, also called foam backed siding, is an increasingly popular choice for new homes, renovations and additions. Knowing that your cladding will last for decades makes it an important decision, and the seemingly endless combination of colours, textures and styles to choose from can make the process overwhelming.

In this post, the siding specialists at Renovaction will share their insights about what you need to know about insulated vinyl siding. We think it ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to:

  • Appearance
  • Durability
  • Energy efficiency
  • Long term value

What is insulated vinyl siding?

Insulated vinyl siding is a type of exterior cladding (covering) that is made from vinyl siding with form-fitted expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation permanently built into the back side. This insulation adds rigidity to the vinyl, resulting in exterior siding that looks and feels considerably more solid than regular “hollow” vinyl siding, and offers a number of benefits.

The appearance factor

Insulated vinyl siding looks different than regular vinyl siding for a number of reasons and is one of the reasons more and more homeowners, developers and contractors are choosing it for the exterior design of their homes.

Colour

Innovations in the manufacturing of insulated vinyl siding allow for a much wider rage of dark, rich colors that previously weren’t available due to climate conditions and fading. Dramatic shades of navy blue, barn red and charcoal are some of our favourites.

Profile

The foam which supports the inside of insulated vinyl siding also allows for wider and flatter profiles than previously possible with traditional vinyl siding which often had more rounded edges. Instead, we’re now seeing sharp, crisp edges and profile lines that look more like real wood.

Seamless

When installed properly, insulated vinyl siding can appear virtually seamless as opposed to the overlapping seams that are impossible to ignore on older vinyl sided buildings. In combination with the rich colour choices, and sharp profiles, insulated vinyl siding gives a much more elevated appearance to the facade of your home.

Durability

Gone are the days of fading, cracking and warping being synonymous with vinyl siding – insulated vinyl siding has removed all of these issues and makes it one of, if not the most durable siding choices on the market today. It never needs to be repainted, and can be simply hosed down with soap and water if needed, although dirt usually washes off on its own in the rain.

The foam backing which is permanently adhered to the vinyl makes insulated vinyls siding panel able to withstand damage from hail, pebbles and stones thrown by the lawnmower, hockey pucks, soccer balls, and all of the natural born enemies of easy-to-crack, hollow, traditional vinyl siding.

This increased durability means that you will not have to replace or repair your exterior cladding for decades to come, all the while maintaining its beautiful like-new appearance.

Energy efficiency

The layer of expanded polystyrene foam in insulated vinyl siding provides, as the name implies, extra insulation with numerous benefits. Depending on the brand you choose, you will benefit from an insulating value of R-2 to R-6 which will put your home well on the way to an Energy Star qualification.

This added insulation not only helps you with reduced heating and cooling costs, other benefits include:

  • more sound insulation from street noise
  • more consistent temperature throughout your home
  • protection from outdoor dampness and moisture
  • providing a barrier against termite infestations

Long-term value

Insulated vinyl siding increases the value of your home, without question. If you plan to stay in your home for a while, as opposed to someone who is renovating with intentions of a quick flip, then the investment in insulated vinyl siding will earn you a higher return on income (ROI) in the long run. When factoring in the additional savings from energy bills and the maintenance costs associated with flimsier vinyl siding options, choosing foam backed siding makes good money sense for many homeowners.
