But before you go online and\nstart ordering tile and grout or hardwood flooring, let\u2019s take a\nlook at some of the risks of doing renovation work yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Renovation\nBudget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Too many people underestimate the\n\ttotal cost of their renovation project\n\t<\/li><li>There are many unseen materials to\n\tbe accounted for with any project, large or small (painting is not\n\tjust the cost of the paint and a bathroom renovation is not just the\n\tcost of the tile, vanity and mirror)\n\t<\/li><li>Too few people remember to include\n\ta \u201cbuffer\u201d or \u201cmiscellaneous\u201d line in their budget; this is\n\tto account for unforseen circumstances or changes you make along the\n\tway\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t properly create a budget\nfor your renovation you run the risk of running out of money before\nthe project is complete, which means you\u2019ll likely spend more than\nyou can afford, or not finish the project until you can afford to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Underestimating the\nTime Your Project Will Take \n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People tend to overestimate they\n\ttime they have available to work on a project\n\t<\/li><li>People also tend to underestimate\n\tthe amount of time a project will take\n\t<\/li><li>If a project goes on too long, you\n\tcan get discouraged and frustrated at the mess and disruption to\n\tyour household\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t correctly anticipate how\nmuch time a project will take, you run the risk of either rushing the\nlast part of the project or letting it trail off and remain 90%\ncomplete in perpetuity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials Ordering\nand Taking Measurements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cMeasure twice, cut once\u201d is a\n\thandy saying carpenters have. Many people are not adept at\n\tcalculating exactly how much of a particular material they need and\n\toften end up on the side of not having enough\n\t<\/li><li>Considering the timing of ordering\n\tcertain materials and pieces is also important; for example, a\n\tcustom countertop can take several weeks to arrive after it\u2019s been\n\tordered\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t accurately order\nmaterials or consider the timing for deliveries and custom pieces,\nyou run the risk of having too many materials piled up in your space\nthat you aren\u2019t ready to use, or having long gaps of time where you\ncan\u2019t work on the project at all while you wait for something to be\nmade or delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some home renovation projects are\nmanageable and would cause little stress, financial hardship or\nfrustration to complete, a lot of projects are bigger than they first\nappear. Setting realistic expectations for what you can manage and\nwhat should be better left to a professional can ultimately save you\ntime, money, and mental stress. Ask yourself if you fully understand\nthe scope of the project, all the materials required, and have\nexperience doing the work for your specific project.
